L. Felix Vince Cruz' impressions of RINA 1

Foreword: Although it's often conceded that a picture speaks a thousand words, there are things about a person that a picture cannot convey. For example, how does a person feel about an event that just happened can never be gathered from looking at his photo alone. Also, there's a saying which says “First impression is lasting.” As the event being written about was the 2002 Las Vegas reunion, the first of four RINA “babies” to date, I've reproduced in full below Felix Vince Cruz' gushing 5-page email letter dated 12 Oct. 2002).

Dear Friends and classmates,

Tito De Vera: “Best Thing that ever Happened in my Life.”
Practically a month has gone by since we got home on Friday the 13th of September. The suitcases are finally unpacked. Didn't win either the lotto or mega million, so Maria and I both have to go back to work. In addition to work, there still seems to be no letup with “must-do” chores and weekend activities. To make matters worse, Maria had to attend a seminar in Boston for a week. At best, I can only collect sporadic thoughts and convert them into written form in whatever time available as long as this darn computer works. Except for one that is still in the camera, all the 35mm film cartridges are developed and I had a peek at the digital shots. Like the old cliche, actions speak louder than words. In this case, the actions captured in pictures pretty much depicted the outcome of the almost three and a half days of togetherness. The genuine expressions of gushing smiles and laughter from the faces of classmates, spouses and friends alike, are just undeniable feelings of great joy! Even the seemingly over taciturn and deadly serious Ben Ramos' smile is simply contagious! Tony Jugueta succinctly described it when he uttered “Masakit na ang panga ko!” at the picnic during the picture takings. Also in the words of Juanito De Vera, “It was the best thing that ever happened in my life!” (Lani, of course, was just as best or perhaps even better). The almost incessant smiles, spontaneous bursts of laughter, continuous merriments and even tears of joy starting Tuesday night (September 10) when almost everyone finally arrived and met each other for the first time at Frontier Hotel's restaurant, to the Gold Coast Casino Show Room, to Frontier's lobby and parking lot every morning, to Red Rock Canyon, to Suncoast Casino, to Hoover Dam, to the old town and finally to Freny's house, were truly exciting and unforgettable times indeed! I just wish that the rest of our classmates (and their families or friends) who are also here in North America like Juliet Agacite, Josefina Agliam-Joven, Roberto Asperin, Jose Cagampan Jr., Remedios Calderon-Catacutan, Linda Candelario-Manaois, Ligliwa Dalimot-Dizon, Perla Galano-Aguilar, Fernando Mendoza and Amelia Olegario-Flores were with us to cherish these magical and wonderful moments!”

‘Prodigal Son’ Homecoming-like Celebration
Call it anything you want, but the reunion was an exhilarating experience for me. Never in my younger days did it ever occur to me that I would be traveling past the shores of our native land and much less meeting numerous classmates in a distant country more than four decades later. The farewell brunch at Freny's house may not be comparable to the biblical parable of the prodigal son, but the occasion nevertheless deserved an equivalent celebration. The realization of sharing a joyous feast with childhood acquaintances as well as new found friends and the unexpected familial-like bond and camaraderie that emerged during those few days of being together was just emotionally overwhelming for me. On the other hand, all the excitement made mother time to zip through quickly and left some of us with a feeling that the reunion was somewhat incomplete even after bidding each other goodbye. Forty three years of not seeing each other for most of us, is a long time that definitely holds vast amount of pleasant memories, stories, and jokes that should be shared, told and swapped especially so in these waning years of our lives. The three days of being together was just not enough. Perhaps, the inescapable sights and glitter of Las Vegas and the ever nagging hope of winning the big one deprived us from accomplishing all of these. However, good things must not come to an abrupt end but should be resumed somewhere sometime. With this in mind, keep in touch, stay in shape and August of 2004 should not be much of a wait.

The Precursor to Subsequent Reunions
Looking back, reunion for MHS Class of '59 is not something new. The 1986 Homecoming that was held at the grounds of Mangatarem High School and attended by numerous classmates including several overseas residents is probably the precursor to subsequent reunions. After this particular homecoming event, mini-reunions were then held right around the town fiesta every January, which also coincides with the annual medical mission of Fil. Consequential to attending a military retiree reunion in Manila, I managed to attend one of these mini-reunions last January 2001 at the behest of Fil. The reunion was brief but I had fun. Prior to learning from Manang Cecilia Daranciang (of Seattle) that Fil is in South Dakota, I never had the slightest idea of every classmate's whereabouts. Luckily, Fil's name was listed in the Internet white pages. He returned my recorded call and from our lengthy conversation I got the names of classmates (with some addresses and telephone numbers) that are in US and Canada. From thereon, phone operators and inputs from Febe Valdez-Amstrong helped me established the present roster of Class '59 in North America. The mini-reunion in Mangatarem left me with a lingering afterthought that a reunion in the US would probably be as nice. I mentioned the idea to Fil and Roger and learned that a similar plan was attempted earlier. Around the early part of 2001, when I started gathering the names, telephone numbers, home and email addresses of classmates in the US and Canada, the idea did not seem far-fetched. It was at this point, when I told Fil, that I was going to give it a shot.

Conceiving the First RINA “Baby”
Selling the reunion idea to the classmates in North America started with a letter and a flier with suggested tours, cruises, locations, number of days and dates and rationale for the best places and dates. The hardest part was getting everyone (including spouses) to get the same vacation dates from work. (Note: August 2004 was selected by virtue of a majority vote during the meeting at Red Rock Canyon. From my experience with the Post Office, summer months vacation are the most difficult if not impossible to get for junior employees like me. I am not trying to change the date but I'm just being realistic about my chances.) After the uncertainties of 9/11 had subsided, coordination for the reunion resumed. For the purpose of getting some ideas on how to maximize the three day event, Maria and I together with Mike and Vangie Seril, went to Las Vegas last February (2002). After getting a phone list of all the hotels, I started to inquire for banquet hall rentals that may be used for a planned dinner dance and convocation program for the final day. This was all changed when I got hold of Freny (via a Pennsylvania phone operator who gave me her son's number) during the latter part of February of this year. Upon learning of the ongoing plan for class reunion, Freny and Romy sent everyone a proposed set of activities for a three day event. Since the objective of the reunion is togetherness for reminiscence and enjoyment, the proposed activities consisting of a picnic, touring, dancing, watching shows and even gambling was just perfect for the occasion. The timetable set for the itinerary allowed enough flexibility for any on the spot changes and time management became a non-critical issue.

Why Las Vegas?
Holding the reunion in Las Vegas was just ideal and it's almost as if by grand design that Freny and Romy, with no prior knowledge that Las Vegas was already selected as the reunion site, conveniently decided to move here (two years ago) from Pennsylvania. Their years of involvement and leadership experience within the various Filipino-American professional and social circles in Pennsylvania also made them the perfect facilitator, tour guide and host. The locations, schedule of activities, directions, catering reservations and the beautiful banner were all in place from the get go. Also, despite the lack of sleep for all those days, Freny and Romy never wavered from their trouper demeanor. During all those gatherings, Romy was the ever funny photographer and video cameraman making sure that everybody was always in a happy mood. Meticulous, conscientious and perfectionist as always, he and Freny drove around the city to catch the famous sights, sounds and glitter and also went back to Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam a few days after the reunion, to take more scenery shots that were spliced with the video tape copies that were sent to each classmate.

Co-deliverers of the First RINA “Baby”
Aside from doing an excellent job all through the late stages of the planning and during the reunion itself, Freny and Romy, undoubtedly were also the added and needed catalysts to the total bonding and enjoyment of everyone! Having played some role in coordinating this reunion, I am profoundly grateful to you Freny and Romy for the exceptional and wonderful job! This particular reunion is also made more special with the presence of Roger and Linda Mondala. As we all know, aside from traversing nine thousand miles, Roger risked management of the Maritime Academy of Asia and Pacific (MAAP) to his subordinates just to join us. Having coordinated the 1986 reunion Homecoming, Roger does have a beforehand knowledge of what is to be expected in a reunion. In his 7/24/01 email, he stated that the Class '59 Reunion in North America (RINA) is something else that is hard to miss for which he will try to move heaven and earth to join us. Facetious or otherwise, his actual presence at the reunion was an extraordinary feat that shows perspicacity, determination and real understanding of reunions on his part! In his own words, “an aging carabao needs more to imbibe from the font of reminiscences which is the only true healing act that gives nourishment to a world-weary body and spirit.” I sincerely hope that our reunion did just that, not only for Roger, but also for everyone.

Special Thanks
I am also specially thankful to Fil for not only providing addresses and phone numbers of classmates in North America, but also for giving me insights to other class reunions and being very instrumental in convincing other classmates to attend. Josie's wholehearted, of course, cannot be overlooked and I am also thankful to her. Special thanks also goes to Febe for giving me the classmate's addresses here in US and Canada as well as relevant news regarding other classmates in Mangatarem. I am as well thankful to Maring for acting as the coordinator for classmates in southern California with no email facilities. Febe and Maring are also very commendable for leading the female/male singalongs at the picnic as well as at the farewell brunch. My sincere thanks also goes to Pepe and Adele for assisting Freny and Romy and their help in procuring supplies for the picnic and brunch, and directing us to the dance casinos. I am also thankful to Mike and Vangie for showing Maria and me Las Vegas and his help in relaying the latest reunion newsbits to classmates in southern California during the coordination phases.

Joe Gonzales' Participation
Jose Gonzales probably doesn't need any recognition, but his initiation of the impromptu mini program during the picnic that included reading of articles from “The Mango” (which I luckily brought along), such as Class History by Roger, Class Prophecy by Ben, Graduation Day by Freny, Last Will and Testament by Fil and then the singalongs, just can't be ignored and definitely deserve thanks. I am also particularly thankful to Tony for acting as the bodyguard and safely driving the three angels Bing Aviles, Betty Ferrer-Diaz and Clarita Guiang-Basa. We are still a year and ten months away from San Diego, but the earnest acceptance and willingness on the part of Juanito and Lani De Vera to host the next reunion, is both very encouraging and reassuring. Thanks Tito and Lani. Special thanks also goes to Clarita Guiang-Basa who had to leave early for the Philippines and deliver the picnic on the spot collection of $160 as help for Teresita Olegaio-Castro's medical situation. My special thanks also goes to Emerita Caoile-Viray, Jerry and Vida Dacanay for accompanying Maring to the reunion. Lastly, but probably just as foremost in importance, I would like to thank my Maria and all the classmate's spouses Adele Arellano, Teresa Asperin, Lani De Vera, Mima Gonzales, Cecilia Mondala, Linda Mondala, Josie Olegario, Fely Ramos, Tony Ignacio, Eva Seril and Sam Amstrong for their wholehearted support for this very special occasion. Of course, I am also very thankful to classmates (not mentioned above) Clemente Asperin, Sylvia Aviles, Betty Ferrer-Diaz, Jaime Mondala and Estrella Seril Ignacio who took the time and effort to attend this milestone event. It will take some time before I'm done making copies of the pictures from Fil and Amy. Once it's done I will be sending each and everyone's copies. For the benefit of everyone, the following is a general chronology of events (as far as I can recall) that is supplemental to the video take for the reunion.

Day 1 - Arrival of Tony Jugueta and the 'Chicago Angels'
September 8 - Tony Jugueta together with Sylvia Aviles, Betty Ferrer-Diaz and Clarita Guiang-Basa arrived and checked in at Monte Carlo Resort Casino.

Day 2 - Meeting with Ben Ramos at Frontier's Lobby
September 9 - Maria and I arrived and checked in at Frontier Casino. Ben and Fely also arrived a little later and checked in at the same hotel. Periodically, I checked any arrivals from the front desk. That's how I got hold of Ben and we met at the lobby. Early that evening, Freny, Romy and Pepe arrived. We tried to get hold of Tony and the three angels before they lose their reunion dues but they were other end of town.

Day 3 - Chaos and Commotion at Frontier's Banquet Room (Fotos #1, #2 and #3)
September 10 - Arrivals that day at Frontier Casino were Febe and Sam Armstrong, Maring Carpio-Vergara along with Emerita Caoile-Viray, Vida and Jerry Dacanay, Jaime and Cecilia Mondala, Bing Seril-Ignacio along with her daughter and grandchild, and late that evening were Fil and Josie Olegario. Joe and Mima also booked in at Frontier but I'm not exactly sure when they actually arrived in town. Mike and Vangie Seril along with Roger and Linda Mondala also arrived that day but were booked in at Circus Circus. June and Teresa Asperin also arrived that evening but were booked at the Stratosphere. Juanito and Lani De Vera arrived late that evening and also checked in at Frontier. With the exception of Jun, Teresa, Juanito and Lani who we met the following morning, the rest of the group met at the Frontier's restaurant little banquet room for the first time. Between courses of orders for dinner, we had the expected hellos, hugs, excited chats and picture takings. To describe it as a situation of chaos and commotion is an understatement. It was more like the market place on Sunday in Mangatarem, but it was exciting and we all had fun. After dinner, we went to Gold Coast Hotel (a Filipino band was playing) for dancing and drinking till past midnight. Most of us guys actually just drink and watched Maring, Pepe and Mike show their dancing prowess.

Day 4 - Picnic at Red Rock Canyon
September 11 - As scheduled this is the first day (picnic at Red Rock Canyon about 20 miles northwest of the strip) of the reunion. This day is particularly disconcerting for a good reason. A few weeks before the reunion, I made note of this predicament and suggested to everyone that we should probably be low-keyed in our celebration on this particular day. The excited and lively conversation that started at Frontier's parking lot (Foto #4) pretty much set the tone for the rest of the day. Fortunately, the place is far from the city and there were only a handful of other visitors. The picnic area virtually belonged to us and despite some changes in the plans (not everybody were able to do the scenic drive) and poor cell phone communications up in the hills, we really had a ball! The food was catered by a local Pinoy restaurant and it was just like home. The almost never ending picture taking and the impromptu program all added to the merriments. A meeting that was originally scheduled for the farewell brunch was also held briefly for the sake of Clarita who was leaving for the Philippines the following morning, and also Febe and Sam who were to leave early Friday. By mid-afternoon, Bing's daughter went to the airport to pick up her Dad Tony Ignacio (he joined us the following morning). We all headed back to the city late in the afternoon before it started to rain. That night, most of us first went to the Sun Coast Casino for dinner and dancing but later moved to Gold Coast Casino for a better band.

Day 5 - Visit to Hoover Dam
September 12 - Probably due to lack of sleep, the car entourage to Hoover Dam left Frontier parking lot about mid-morning (Foto #4). Maria and I even managed to pick up her mother and sister from the airport and get back to the parking lot with lots of time to spare. Hoover Dam is supposedly just a 45 minute drive but since most of the drivers are not familiar with the area, members of the group arrived at different times. The dam is really just a humongous man-made block of cement that was constructed for the sole purpose of controlling water flow and generate electricity. The heat (about 96 degrees) was just overbearing and moving around was a task. The ice cream parlor was definitely an attraction and the periodical show regarding the construction of the dam was a good place to catch up some snooze. Had an afternoon lunch at Fiesta Casino on the way back. Watched the hourly “Light Show” that evening at the old downtown Las Vegas.

Day 6 - Farewell Brunch at Freny's House
September 13 - Febe and Sam left for the airport early in the morning. The directions to Freny's house was as clear as mud (just kidding Romy) but everybody managed to find the place. Most of the dishes were also catered by the same Pinoy restaurant but some were prepared by Freny, Adele, Maring and Pepe (I'm sure there were other helping hands). Just like at the picnic, Maring did the invocation prior to the brunch. The next few hours after lunch were spent chatting, watching videos from the previous days and nights, some singing and more picture taking. The reunion ended with each classmate's bidding farewells to everyone.

Looking Ahead to RINA 2
For other matters, I need more information regarding Josefina Bugarin, Remedios Pascua and Rogelio Pine who are supposedly residing in North America also. Would the Mangatarem Post Office be of help? Does anyone have a copy of the IV-2 graduation picture? Other than those that we already knew, any clue as to the whereabouts of every '59 classmate? I very am curious and won't mind compiling a complete list if possible. Once again, I would like to reiterate my thanks to everyone for making this reunion really memorable. The next reunion date had been set and with the enthusiasm of Juanito and Lani and everyone's spirit of “bayanihan” or “tagnawa” in our local lingo, the San Diego reunion should be just as exciting if not better. This is all for now, may the best of blessings be upon you always.
